Modeling human color categorization

چکیده
A unique color space segmentation method is introduced. It is founded on features of human cognition, where 11 color categories are used in processing color. In two experiments, human subjects were asked to categorize color stimuli into these 11 color categories, which resulted in markers for a Color LookUp Table (CLUT). These CLUT markers are projected on two 2D projections of the HSI color space. By applying the newly developed Fast Exact Euclidean Distance (FEED) transform on the projections, a complete and efficient segmentation of color space is achieved. With that, a human-based color space segmentation is generated, which is invariant for intensity changes. Moreover, the efficiency of the procedure facilitates the generation of adaptable, application-centered, color quantization schemes. It is shown to work excellently for color analysis, texture analysis, and for Color-Based Image Retrieval purposes. 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Modeling human color categorization: Color discrimination and color memory
Color matching in Content-Based Image Retrieval is done using a color space and measuring distances between colors. Such an approach yields nonintuitive results for the user. We introduce color categories (or focal colors), determine that they are valid, and use them in two experiments. The experiments conducted prove the difference between color categorization by the cognitive processes color ...
متن کاملEvolutionary models of color categorization. I. Population categorization systems based on normal and dichromat observers.
The evolution of color categorization is investigated using artificial agent population categorization games, by modeling observer types using Farnsworth-Munsell 100 Hue Test performance to capture human processing constraints on color categorization. Homogeneous populations of both normal and dichromat agents are separately examined. Both types of populations produce near-optimal categorizatio...

Steels & Belpaeme’s (S&B) procedure does not model much of the important variation that occurs across human color categorizers. Human perceptual variation and its corollary consequences impact real-world color categorization. Because of this, investigators with the primary aim of understanding color categorization and naming across cultures should exercise some caution extending these findings ...

Since the 1960’s color categorization and naming has been extensively investigated from the point of view of anthropology, linguistics, psychology, philosophy, color perception studies, and computer modeling; and recently the World Color Survey (WCS ) has provided further support for a view favoring the cross–cultural universality of color categorization (Kay & Regier 2003, Kay 2005, Regier, Ka...
متن کاملPopulation heterogeneity and color stimulus heterogeneity in agent-based color categorization.
Investigating the interactions between universal and culturally specific influences on color categorization across individuals and cultures has proven to be a challenge for human color categorization and naming research. The present article simulates the evolution of color lexicons to evaluate the role of two realistic constraints found in the human phenomenon: (i) heterogeneous observer popula...
